Twelve-year-old Esteban, a foundling raised in Barcelona, carries a strange medallion and has an inexplicable ability: he can make the sun appear, which earns him the name Child of the Sun. When his adoptive father dies, Esteban learns that he was saved as a baby from a ship going down at sea. His medallion seems to point toward the New World and perhaps the legendary Cities of Gold, so he leaves Spain to find his parents and discover who he is. Along the way, Esteban meets Zia, an Inca girl taken from her people years ago, who wears an identical medallion. Later they are joined by Tao, a young castaway from the Galapagos and the final heir of the Heva Empire, which legend credits with building the golden cities. Guided by Coyolite, the bright star shown on their medallions, the three children journey through the uncharted lands of the New World, hoping the cities will lead them to their missing parents.
