Hiroyuki's watching the person he loves forget him entirely, reset to factory settings. The show takes that premise, the cruelest sci-fi premise it could, and refuses to make it easy, Multi comes back, but she's a stranger wearing a familiar face, and the quiet horror of that is the entire story. By the final episode, you understand why people who grew up with the original series wept: this isn't a story about getting your friend back. It's about accepting that some versions of people only exist in memory, and learning to say goodbye to them twice.

Hiroyuki and Akari are now in their final year of high school. They and their friends have all grown up in one way or another, whether in body or in mind, but one of their best friends is no longer with them: Multi, a remarkably humanlike android. Then, with no warning, Multi is brought back to their school. The surprise reunion comes with a catch, though, because she is not the same Multi they remember. The series blends romance, drama and everyday school life with a science fiction touch.
