A washed-up warlord from Japan's bloodiest era now lives in a tenement, completely broke, and the only thing he owns is a dog that actively refuses to listen to him. Every episode is him trying to maintain some shred of dignity while this animal dismantles whatever's left of his self-respect. The comedy isn't punching down at a desperate man, it's watching someone who once commanded armies lose every single argument to a mutt who couldn't care less about his past glory.

In Japan's Warring States period, Tono was once a feared, godlike presence on the battlefield. Those days are over, and he now lives in poverty in a run-down tenement house. There he comes across a dog with an odd, short-legged look and, moved by pity, takes it in even though his own life is barely holding together. The dog pays him no attention and does exactly as it pleases, leaving Tono pushed around, yet its mischief soon starts to amuse him. What follows is a gentle slice-of-life comedy told in short episodes about the fearsome former lord and his cheerful companion sharing a home. The series aired in four otherwise identical versions, each with a different actor voicing Tono.
