Scott, Chuck, and Beth don't become heroes because they choose to. They become heroes because three alien consciousnesses need bodies to fight a war they never started. The film moves fast enough that you stop asking why this is happening and start feeling what it costs them to keep fighting. The animation carries weight that the script doesn't bother explaining, which is exactly the right call for a 1989 tokusatsu hybrid that knows what it is.
