Set in ancient Japan, this comedic romance offers a very loose, liberal retelling of the Hyakunin Isshu, the anthology of one hundred poems by one hundred different poets, among them Murasaki Shikibu, author of The Tale of Genji. The collection is also known from the traditional card game Karuta. Fujiwara no Teika, the man who chose the poems, presents the stories and gives a glimpse of how some of them came to be written. Because most of the verses are about love, the focus stays on romance in ancient Japan.
