Oscar and André's love story refuses to be contained by the world trying to destroy it. The French Revolution becomes the backdrop for two people discovering that some bonds outlast empires. The romance doesn't soften the historical violence, it collides with it head-on, which is what makes the ending so inevitable and so unbearable.
Versailles no Bara: Seimei Aru Kagiri Aishite is a 1987 theatrical film that condenses the Versailles no Bara TV anime into a single feature, with several roles given new voice actors, including Keiko Toda as Oscar. The story starts from three people born in 1755 in different European countries: Hans Axel von Fersen, eldest son of a Swedish nobleman; Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, daughter of the French General de Jarjayes; and Marie Antoinette, the Austrian princess who becomes queen of France. In 1773 Antoinette and Oscar slip into Paris in disguise for the masquerade at the Opera, where they meet Fersen. Drama and romance follow from that meeting.
