A woman trained to feel nothing writes letters that break other people open, until she has to write one that matters. The movie abandons plot to sit with Violet's hands shaking over a pen, with a letter she can't finish, with the weight of someone she loved and couldn't save. It's animation and music and silence working together to say what dialogue never could, that some griefs don't resolve, they just become part of how you breathe.

Violet Evergarden, a former child soldier, now works as an Auto Memory Doll, putting into letters the words her clients cannot find themselves. Her reputation keeps growing, even as a radio tower rises in Leidenschaftlich and telephones threaten to make her profession less needed. Yet while giving voice to others' emotions, she may have neglected her own. When a terminally ill boy asks her to write for his family, her own feelings about love and loss come back to the surface. She must face her past and the death of the Major, while holding on to a faint hope that the man who once told her he loved her might still be alive. The film is a drama with fantasy and slice-of-life elements about Violet's continuing effort to understand emotion and what love means.
