These characters feel like people you already know, even the ones who make no sense. The comedy doesn't come from gags or setups, it comes from watching Souta react to Kyoko's complete refusal to work, or Popura's tiny-person energy colliding with everyone else's expectations. By episode six you stop waiting for a plot to happen and realize you've been watching four people become your friends for thirteen hours straight.

Souta Takanashi is a 16-year-old high school student with a soft spot for small, cute things. That weakness is why he cannot refuse when the childlike Popura Taneshima recruits him to work part-time at Wagnaria, a family restaurant in Hokkaido. Popura is a year older than Souta but easily taken for an elementary or middle schooler, and his habit of fussing over her only feeds her complex about looking so young. The rest of the staff keeps him on his toes: floor chief Yachiyo Todoroki carries a katana, head chef Jun Satou is intimidating, sous chef Hiroomi Souma knows far too much and has a quietly sadistic streak, 28-year-old manager Kyouko Shirafuji refuses to do any work, and waitress Mahiru Inami has a fear of men that hurts. The result is a slice-of-life workplace comedy built on the clash of these eccentric personalities.
