Wakaba＊Girl ran in short bursts, barely enough time to breathe between gags, and this extra finally lets the gang sit still in hot water and just be themselves. Wakaba is still the wealthy daughter who thinks gyaru culture is the height of cool and gets it endearingly wrong, which is exactly the energy you want in an onsen episode. Moeko drifts through it like she wandered out of a picture book, Mao does whatever Mao feels like, and Nao's brain is never more than ten seconds from a BL tangent. No stakes, no arc, no lesson. Just the specific comfort of a show that likes its characters enough to give them a bath and let the credits roll.

Wakaba and her friends return in a single extra episode of Wakaba＊Girl, included with the second Blu-ray and DVD volume of the 2015 series. Wakaba Kohashi comes from a wealthy family and looks the part of a refined young lady, yet she idolizes flashy gyaru fashion. Around her are the dreamy, innocent Moeko, the whimsical Mao, who goes her own way, and Nao, a former sporty type who is now devoted to boys-love stories. Like the main series, the special is a light comedy about the everyday lives of four very different girls.
