A mother dog breaks her chain to stay with an old man buried in rubble after an earthquake takes everything. The OVA doesn't ask you to feel sad about it, it just shows you a creature choosing to be present when presence is all that's left. Mari survives what destroys her world, not because the story needs her to, but because that's what living things do when they love someone.

Adapted from a picture book about the 2004 Chuuetsu earthquake in Niigata prefecture, this one-episode drama centers on Mari, a dog whose three puppies have only just been born when the quake hits the village of Yamakoshi. Her home is wrecked, and her elderly owner lies pinned under the debris. Mari manages to snap her chain and stays by his side, encouraging him until rescuers come. The old man is saved, but he is unable to take the dogs with him, so Mari and her puppies are left behind in the deserted village, facing an uncertain future on their own.
