Thirty minutes, one Toei animation fair short, and it still gets whispered about like contraband. This is Season 0 Yugi, the sharp-faced, mean-eyed Dark Yugi who plays for keeps, not the softened Duel Monsters cartoon kid you grew up with, and Kaiba shows up wanting one thing: the Red-Eyes Black Dragon that Shougo Aoyama is too scared to even play. The whole thesis is right there in the tagline, Blue-Eyes brings victory, Red-Eyes brings the possibility of it, and the movie makes a timid kid earn the difference. The card rules are pure pre-Battle City chaos, the art is that grimy late-90s Toei texture nobody replicated later, and Blue-Eyes hits the field like a threat instead of a merch spot. If you've only seen the 4Kids era, this is the version where a trading card game actually feels dangerous.

In Domino City, the card game Duel Monsters is wildly popular: two Duelists battle with monster cards from their decks, each starting with two thousand Life Points. Timid Shougo Aoyama buys cards and finds the legendary Red Eyes Black Dragon among them. Legend holds that it offers only the potential for victory, not victory itself. News of the card reaches Seto Kaiba, a competitive Duelist who wants the strongest cards by any means. He invites Shougo and Yuugi Mutou to a tournament, where Shougo must find the courage to face his fear of losing. The film is a fantasy adventure with comic touches.
