Tooru's Blaze is a shield in a world built for weapons, and the show knows exactly what that means: he's the guy who protects instead of destroys, and that conviction never wavers even when it costs him. The romance with Lilith isn't a subplot you tolerate between action scenes; it's the actual story, grounded in two people choosing each other despite a system designed to separate them. A shield-user in a combat school could be played as weakness; instead it's his entire identity, and the show builds everything around that choice.

Some people can draw a weapon out of their own soul, a power called a Blaze, and they train at Kouryou Academy High School to control it. Tooru Kokonoe wants to enroll there to become stronger after a mysterious man killed his sister and friends. At the opening ceremony he is made to duel the student seated beside him, and the loser is expelled. When his Blaze appears, it is a shield rather than a weapon, an oddity that draws the interest of a foreign student named Julie Sigtuna. Every student must pair with a partner in the hope of one day reaching the power known as Absolute Duo, and that Duo system leaves Tooru sharing his living quarters with a silver-haired girl. The TV series mixes supernatural action with romance and ecchi elements.
