Acro Trip commits entirely to this absurdist logic, and the comedy lands because the show treats an otaku's descent into villainy with the same deadpan earnestness as a slice-of-life about making friends. The real magic is that Chroma, the bumbling nemesis, becomes the emotional center, a character so genuinely likeable that rooting against Berry Blossom feels natural instead of forced.

Chizuko Date is an otaku girl living in a city in Niigata Prefecture, where she is devoted to Berry Blossom, the local magical girl who keeps the city safe. But Berry's battles have grown dull, because her opponent Chroma of the evil organization Fossa Magna is so hopeless that hardly anyone bothers watching anymore. When Chizuko runs into Chroma and airs her complaints, the desperate villain, facing forced resignation if he keeps losing, asks her to become his second-in-command. Wanting to see Berry's full power and win back her spotlight, this seemingly timid middle schooler has to decide whether siding with her hero's enemy is the right call. The result is a supernatural slice-of-life comedy that looks at the magical girl formula from the villains' side.
