A magical girl show that commits to making you a villain fan, then doubles down on that bit for thirteen episodes straight. The premise never wears out because the voice acting is so sharp, every gasp, every smirk, every defeated sigh lands exactly where it needs to. Utena Hiiragi, a middle school girl, adores Tres Magia, the trio of magical girls who defend her town. When a mysterious black mascot offers her the chance to transform, she jumps at it. The twist hits hard: she's not meant to be a hero. She's the villain. Recruited by an evil organization and placed at the head of the local baddies, Utena at first tries to quit her new position. Then something clicks. Tormenting the very heroines she adored turns out to be a thrill, and she proves a natural at it. Her admiration slowly turns into a sadistic fixation. Adapted from a manga by Akihiro Ononaka, this black comedy flips the magical girl formula on its head, mixing slice of life moments with plenty of ecchi humor.
