This is the franchise that treats the low-angle panty shot as a compositional principle, and ZERO commits harder than anything before it. Nishijima's camera does not sneak looks, it plants itself on the floor and dares you to pretend you're here for the plot, which is exactly why the AIKa faithful never left. And there is plot: a girls' academy quietly hoovering up its prettiest students into a "club" that abducts and puppets them by thoroughly indecent means, until Aika Sumeragi happens to fly overhead at the wrong moment and gets jumped for witnessing it. Nineteen-year-old Aika Sumeragi attends college in a future world mostly under water, training as an agent while helping with Gozo Aida's salvage business. At a girls' academy, strange things are happening: the cutest and prettiest students keep joining an internal club, only to be abducted by a mysterious being that takes control of them through indecent means. Aika happens to fly past during one abduction and is attacked to keep her away, which only makes her curious about where the attack came from. Her chance to find out arrives when her former partners from R-16 decide to look into the kidnappings. The three-episode OVA mixes action, adventure and comedy with the heavy fanservice the franchise is known for.
