The summer arc earns its own story. Kanan, Ryuya, and Uraha become real people instead of exposition machines, their small moments together matter more than the supernatural machinery grinding in the background. Kyoto Animation animates quiet conversations like they're the only scenes worth drawing, and by the end you understand why these three had to find each other before anything else could break or heal.

Kanna refuses to be moved to another shrine and parted from her friends, so she slips away at night with Ryuya, her faithful bodyguard, and Uraha, the companion she confides in. With pursuers close on their trail, the three set out to find Kanna's mother, whom she has not seen in years and longs to meet again. Along the way they get a taste of life beyond the palace walls, a calm but short-lived break from what lies ahead. This two-episode special expands on the summer arc of the Air television series, showing more of the trio's journey through a blend of comedy, drama, romance and the supernatural.
