A family held together by obligation finally has a reason to fight side by side. The mecha battles are window dressing; what matters is watching a burnt-out mom, a checked-out dad, a daughter drowning in resentment, and a kid who swears like a sailor actually need each other for the first time. By the final frame, you understand that saving Earth is just the excuse they needed to save themselves.
The Daichi family is crumbling. Mom Seiko, fed up and fixated on money, has handed divorce papers to her timid otaku husband Mamoru, while daughter Nozomi resents being stuck with all the chores and foul-mouthed youngest Dai watches it all come apart. When the Galaxy Federation enlists them to defend Earth from alien threats, the family gets a shot at saving the planet and perhaps itself. This OVA was an alternate episode 11 that later appeared on DVD. A simulation game park called Amber Crystal opens in Chiba, admitting only couples with special tickets on its first day. Seiko arrives with cameraman Hayakawa and Mamoru with Junko-sensei. Mamoru plays a knight and builds up experience, while Seiko, now a mage, discovers the park is a space monster's invasion and heads for the game's final boss.
