A-ko is pure 80s absurdist energy compressed into 90 minutes: a girl with impossible strength fights her jealous classmate over their mutual friend while an alien armada literally arrives to ruin the day. The movie treats a magical girl love triangle and an alien invasion with the exact same comedic deadpan, so you're never sure if the next scene will be slapstick or genuinely spectacular. It knows exactly what it is, a gorgeous, ridiculous, unapologetically fun action-comedy that doesn't waste a second pretending to be anything else.

A-ko heads off to school in the futuristic metropolis of Graviton City with her spacey best friend C-ko, but her routine gets upended fast. B-ko, a wealthy and brilliant rival used to getting her way, has decided she wants C-ko as her own best friend and will use any means to take A-ko's place. A-ko is no ordinary student: she has superhuman strength and speed, so B-ko builds a mecha and challenges her to a fight at the school gate. Meanwhile, an enormous alien ship arrives over Earth, searching for something left behind. It's colorful, fast, and totally ridiculous in the best way.
