A kid trying to survive on the streets of Midgar. That's the entire story, and it breaks you because the animation doesn't look away from him. The OVA doesn't need to explain who Denzel is to the broader Final Fantasy universe, it just shows you a boy learning that hope costs something, and watching him reach for it anyway will stay with you longer than any Advent Children scene ever could.
The planet is slowly recovering after a three-way war between the Shinra electric company, the rebel group Avalanche and Sephiroth. On the edge of Midgar's ruins stands a new town called Edge. There, Reeve Tuesti, once Shinra's head of urban development, interviews a young boy named Denzel, who hopes to join the World Regenesis Organization, a group dedicated to restoring and protecting the planet. As Denzel tells Reeve his painful story, he looks back on how the fallout from Avalanche's actions devastated Midgar and claimed everyone he knew. Through that retelling, he finds a new sense of purpose. Adapted from a spinoff novel, this action fantasy OVA was released as a bonus on the Blu-ray editions of Advent Children Complete.
