Genei Toshi is a short abstract animation made by Shimamura Tatsuo in 1967. Taking its cue from the lattice-like structure of an actual modern skyscraper and the roar of city traffic, the film turns the feeling of urban alienation into abstract images. Its visuals shift from optical art toward spatial ideas that recall Escher's impossible staircases. The soundtrack pairs electronic music with ordinary everyday noises, among them a photocopier at work, giving this psychological experiment a distinctly mechanical, modern texture.
