The animation doesn't just support the action, it IS the action, every frame crackling with Gainax's signature delirium and color bleeding into pure kinetic joy. Nono's wide-eyed belief that she can save everything crashes against the reality of what Lal'C has already lost, and that gap between hope and survival becomes the emotional core the spectacle hangs on. You need the original Gunbuster to understand what's been paid in blood, but Diebuster earns the right to be something lighter by never forgetting the cost.

Gunbuster's last mission wiped out the space monsters' star system, yet the war goes on, and after generations of fighting nobody remembers how it started. Humanity's last hope is Topless, an elite group of young pilots whose special powers let them run the Buster Machines. Nono, a girl from a remote Martian town, grew up on stories of the legendary pilot Nono-Riri and dreams of following in her footsteps. Down on her luck, she meets the lonely Topless ace Lal'C Melk Mark, looks up to her as a big sister, and bets her whole future on following her. With teammates Nicholas and Chiko, they fight to protect mankind from the space monsters, in a mecha OVA that mixes action with comedy.
