A pachislot machine becomes a girl, gets a job at a gambling hall in downtown Tokyo, and somehow this is the most effortlessly charming comedy no one's talking about. The premise sounds like a joke setup that collapses by episode two, but Hanabi and her friends live in it like it's the most natural thing in the world. That deadpan acceptance of the absurd is what makes it work, it's comedy that doesn't need to wink at you.

Hanabi is a pachislot machine that has taken human form, and she lives in Shitamachi God Heaven, a shuttered pachinko hall in downtown Tokyo. When recent college graduate Musashi Shinonome inherits the hall from his late grandfather, he finds her asleep inside, and she proves her claim by transforming and firing fireworks out of her body. He soon meets her pachislot sisters, the energetic Versus and the loving Thunder. Together they set out to restore the hall and make its grand reopening a success, even as their efforts keep falling flat. Mixing comedy, fantasy and slice of life, the short series finds its laughs in how they fail side by side.
