This is the season that tries to make you feel something about a show you started watching to laugh at ninja nonsense, and watching it fumble that pivot is its own kind of fascinating. Season one ran on gag momentum: Himawari, Hayate, and a classroom of would-be shinobi failing upward in thirteen tidy, standalone servings. Too!! keeps the jokes but starts digging into the past, specifically the mystery ninja who saved Himawari when she was small, and the drama lands with all the grace of a genin botching a wall-run. Fans will tell you straight that the low-stakes goofing was the whole appeal, and every minute spent on Serious Backstory is a minute not spent on Himawari being an idiot with a shuriken. Watch it anyway, because the romance beats sneak up on you and because you already like these dorks. Just go in expecting a comedy that got ambitious at the worst possible time.
