Tiny deities called Cocotama come to life from the thoughts and feelings held by objects that people treat with great care. The pieces of eggshell they still wear show they are only apprentices, and they practice a mysterious magic in hopes of becoming full gods and being useful to humans. Hidden inside people's homes, they quietly help find lost things, though they slip up often. Fifth-grader Yotsuba Kokoro is clumsy but treasures her belongings, a habit her grandmother taught her by saying everything has a soul. When a Cocotama named Rakitama emerges from one of her colored pencils, Kokoro becomes bound by the Contract of Secrecy and must hide his kind from the world. Living together, the two grow into friends and meet other Cocotama along the way, in a gentle fantasy slice of life.
