The franchise's humor usually runs on Ryo-san dreaming up ways to cash in, whether through a new gadget or a passing craze. He enjoys a burst of success, then leans on Nakagawa once trouble starts, and loses everything when the fad fizzles or spirals. Much of the comedy comes from ordinary people set beside absurd oddities, like Nakagawa's riches, Maria's charm, and police officers who hardly do any real police work, none of it ever explained.
