The Maison Ikkoku cast has never been funnier because a deserted island strips away every escape route for their chaos. Yotsuya's schemes, Mitaka's desperation, Akemi's survival instincts, Godai's endless bad luck, they all collide in real time with nowhere to hide. The animation wobbles in places, but it doesn't matter because the ensemble timing is sharp enough that you're too busy laughing to notice. This OVA understands what makes the original series work: these people are disasters together, and putting them in actual disaster just amplifies what was already there. Twenty-three minutes is criminally short for how much comedy it packs. If you've lived with these characters through the series, this feels less like a bonus episode and more like one last perfect afternoon with people you actually miss seeing on screen.

On a sweltering afternoon, Yotsuya and Ichinose think back to a trip taken by the Ikkoku-kan tenants and Mitaka. The group headed out to sea on Mitaka's new boat, planning a wild party on the water. Their plans sink when the boat breaks apart, and everyone ends up shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. With the whole cast behaving as unpredictably as ever, the empty island becomes a stage for their familiar antics.
