This is what happens when you take the original Mazinger Z and strip away the campy Saturday morning energy to build something that actually earns its melodrama. The early episodes are messy and exposition-heavy enough to test your patience. In the near future, an ore called Japanium is found beneath Mt. Fuji, and it yields Photon Power, an energy source meant to end the world's energy crisis. Dr. Hell, a madman bent on world domination, wants that power for himself. With his subordinates Baron Ashura, Count Brocken and Viscount Pygman, he commands an army of mechanical beasts dug up from the ruins of ancient Greece and sends it against the Photon Power Lab. Facing him is Kouji Kabuto, a hot-blooded teenager who pilots Mazinger Z, the Photon-powered giant robot built by his grandfather, Dr. Juuzou Kabuto. As the fight between Dr. Hell and the Kabuto family goes on, the mysterious Kurogane House becomes tangled up in it. Legends of the Mycenaean Civilization and Bardos Island, along with the secrets of Mazinger Z itself, remain unexplained. The series is an action mecha retelling of the original Mazinger Z, with a new cast and a new story.
