The first half convinces you this is a charming magic-girl adventure, then the second half systematically destroys that reading. Arika's cheerfulness stops working as a shield around episode 13, and the show pivots into something darker, messier, and infinitely more human. By the end you're not watching a girl become an Otome, you're watching her reckon with who she actually is underneath the determination.

Arika Yumemiya travels a long way to reach Garderobe Academy in the Kingdom of Windbloom, where young girls train to become Otome, the protectors of royal rulers across the lands. She also hopes to find her mother, who was a Meister Otome. At the academy she befriends the gifted student Nina Wáng and Mashiro, the kingdom's princess, and throws herself into training. Some enemies know something about her past that she does not, and she learns that the path to becoming an Otome carries danger and murky political dealings. The fantasy series mixes comedy and drama, and it is set in an alternate universe spun off from Mai-HiME.
