The jokes land because nobody in this show takes anything seriously except the bit itself. Laharl wakes up to find his dad dead, and the next ten minutes are spent on absurd demon bureaucracy, a preschooler angel with a gun, and a merchant who charges admission to his own shop. It's a video game that knows exactly what it is, doesn't apologize for the grind, and wraps every level up in a gag that actually lands.

A demon prince wakes from a two-year poisoned sleep to find his father, King Krichevskoy, dead and the Netherworld in chaos as ambitious demons fight for power. Laharl decides the throne is his and sets out to crush the rebellion and proclaim himself Overlord. At his side are Flonne, a scatterbrained angel trainee sent to kill the Overlord, and Etna, a not entirely loyal vassal with a squad of exploding penguin-suited souls. Along the way they clash with dragons, sorceresses, robots, greedy humans and corrupt angels. Adapted from the Disgaea: Hour of Darkness game, the show mixes wisecracking comedy with fantasy action.
