Twenty minutes with no humans in the frame and no dialogue you can translate, and you still follow every beat. That's the flex. Togepi blinks awake mid nap, gets distracted by a flock of flying Pokemon, and wanders off, and suddenly Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Venonat, Marill and Psyduck are running a full search party using nothing but cries, gestures and panic. The Exeggcute bit is the sweetest gag in the whole thing: one of them is missing a piece of the bunch, sees a small round shell with a face, and decides that's their sibling now. Psyduck contributes exactly what you'd expect Psyduck to contribute. It's a plot-first little errand where the characters are pieces on a board, but it's the version of Pokemon that trusts the creatures to carry a story alone, and they do it without saying a word you understand.

While their trainers sleep on a warm day, Togepi gets distracted by a flock of flying Pokémon and ends up separated from the others. Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Venonat, Marill, and Psyduck set out to find it. Along the way they meet Elekid, who brings them to a group of Exeggcute. One Exeggcute is missing an egg and mistakes Togepi for its lost piece, so the gang goes looking for the real egg. Then a storm moves in that could blow Togepi and the Exeggcute away, and the Pokémon have to band together to ride it out. The special is a lighthearted adventure comedy told from the Pokémon's side.
