Three girls in mecha suits fighting underground mechanical beasts to promote clean energy in Tokyo's Nerima ward sounds absurd on paper. It is exactly as absurd when you watch it, and that's the whole point. Robot Girls Z knows it's a parody of Toei's own 1970s robot anime legacy, so it commits fully to the bit instead of winking at the camera, which somehow makes the legitimately cool fight choreography land harder. The three-episode format means there's no bloat, just pure energy and mechanical girls throwing down with real weight behind each punch. You watch this for the same reason you'd rewatch the original Mazinger Z: because giant robots hitting things will always work.

Team Z is a trio of girls reimagined from Toei's classic robots: Z-chan from Mazinger Z, Gre-chan from Great Mazinger, and Grenda-san from UFO Robot Grendizer. Most of the time they appear at events around Nerima ward in Tokyo, spreading the word about Photon Power, a promising energy source for the future. Now and then a gang of Mechanical Beast girls climbs out of the Subterranean Empire to try to steal that energy, and Team Z has to fight them off. Sometimes, though, the heroines go after the bad girls simply to blow off stress. Short and silly, the series is a mecha action comedy built on Toei's robot legacy.
