The four of them weren't always broken. This OVA is the story of how they shattered, watching good men make choices that turn them into the people you already know they became. By the time it ends, every laugh they share in the original series carries the weight of what they lost to get there.
Five hundred years before Genjyo Sanzo and his companions set out west, their earlier incarnations were gods in Heaven who behaved nothing like divine beings. A golden-eyed heretic child arrives there and is placed with the minor deity Konzen, nephew of the goddess Kanzeon Bosatsu, who accepts the charge unwillingly and in time names the boy Goku. Goku befriends Marshal Tenpou and General Kenren of Heaven's Western Army, and meets Nataku, the War Prince, a boy who appears close to his age. Heaven is harsh toward heretics, though, and some schemers hope to use Goku and Nataku to take the throne. When Goku erupts in murderous fury after seeing the death of his closest friend, Heaven decides he must be killed, and Konzen, Tenpou and Kenren stand ready to defy all of Heaven to shield him. The three-episode action fantasy OVA adapts the climactic portion of Saiyuki Gaiden.
