Nobody talks about this one. A one-off Yuasa special about a gelatinous blob exploring the ocean is absurd enough to work, and it works because Yuasa treats the slime's confusion and wonder like it actually matters. The animation breathes in ways most feature films don't. You're watching someone at the absolute peak of their powers make something disposable into something genuinely alive, distributed on a VHS nobody was supposed to keep.

Slime Boukenki: Umi da, Yeah! is a short 1999 special whose lead is a Slime, the familiar monster from the Dragon Quest games. It adapts a manga by Kaneko Osamu, with Yuasa Masaaki directing at Production IG. The genres mark it as a comedic fantasy adventure with some action. It was included on a promotional VHS given away at the 1999 V Jump Festival alongside footage from eight games, and it was also offered as a bonus to a game magazine subscription. Only about 3000 copies were produced.
