By season four, Symphogear stopped pretending plot coherence matters, it just commits to the pure spectacle of watching girls scream transformation phrases and obliterate enemies with weaponized music. The animation doesn't just support the action, it IS the action. Fluid, chainsaw-paced sequences that would exhaust a lesser studio become the entire point of existing. Hibiki Tachibana leads two lives: an ordinary high school student and a member of S.O.N.G., a military organization. Right now her biggest struggle is summer homework. Wearing ancient armor called Symphogear, she and her teammates cooperate with the United Nations to respond to international conflicts and disasters. At a briefing, Hibiki learns of the Bavarian Illuminati, a secretive group blamed for several past catastrophes that now operates in the war-ravaged nation of Val Verde. The team slips into one of the group's factories and frees hundreds of enslaved people. Once discovered, the alchemists Saint-Germain, Cagliostro and Prelati step forward as the organization's leaders, proclaim a worldwide revolution and use their alchemy at the cost of thousands of lives. Hibiki and her allies now face the Illuminati in their hardest and most destructive fight so far. The fourth season of Symphogear mixes action, drama, music, sci-fi and magical girl elements.
