This is the arc that reframes everything, cut loose from the TV show's brawls and fanservice and left to run as straight tragedy. Two years before Toudou Academy's Juken Club became a punchline, Shin Natsume was the sun everyone orbited, and Mitsuomi Takayanagi was his friend before he became the man who put him down. Watching Maya love Mitsuomi while the audience already knows what his hand does to her brother is the kind of dread that ruins a rewatch of the main series in the best way. Madhouse's line work goes heavier here, all sweat and blood and that seal burning on Mitsuomi's chest like a countdown. And when Maya's body breaks and she comes back smaller than she was, the running gag from the TV run stops being funny forever. Ninety minutes, one wound, no relief.

Mitsuomi Takayanagi and Maya Natsume are both driven to become stronger. As they work toward being the best, they discover that a great deal is happening out of sight, and that Maya's brother Shin may be behind all of it. Mitsuomi comes to believe that he alone can stop him. The film retells events from the past of Tenjho Tenge, mixing adventure, drama, romance and the supernatural.
