The nostalgia hits before the plot does. UQ Holder knows exactly what it is: a love letter to Negima fans wrapped in twelve episodes that move too fast to stop and ask questions. The animation is sharp enough to carry you through the chaos, the character moments land when they need to, and seeing Class 3-A again in those pactio transformations is worth the price of admission alone. It's not a faithful adaptation and it doesn't pretend to be. What it is instead is Ken Akamatsu saying thank you to the people who stuck around, even if he only has twelve episodes to do it.

Touta Konoe lives quietly in a rural town, far from the upheaval that followed the world learning magic exists a decade earlier. His days center on his friends and his teacher Yukihime, a powerful sorceress. That calm ends when Yukihime reveals she is a vampire and, to save Touta from a fatal wound, makes him immortal too. Touta sets out toward his dream of climbing Amanomihashira, a tower reaching into space. Along the way he joins UQ Holder, a secret society of immortals like him, where he trains under Yukihime and gains new comrades in this action fantasy with science fiction touches.
