A guy realizes the zombie apocalypse is better than his day job. That's not the joke, that's the entire point, and the show commits to it with such deranged energy that you stop questioning whether this premise makes sense and just start cheering for him to cross off item 47. The comedy lands because Akira's bucket list is sincere; he's not making fun of himself for wanting to live, he's finally allowed to, and watching someone go from completely numb to maniacally alive is funnier than any gag about the undead could ever be.
