Mogura collects ghosts in a lantern because heaven fired him, and somehow that setup creates a show where the supernatural feels like a side gig to the real work of just existing. Every person he meets starts seeing things they shouldn't, which means his mere presence rewires how the world works around them. The comedy lands because he's genuinely trying to unfuck his eternal prospects, not because the show is winking at the audience. This is what happens when you give a deadbeat protagonist actual stakes without making him tragic about it.

Momoyuki Mogura is stuck. Banned from the afterlife because of an incident, this shady self-proclaimed hermit cannot die, so he gathers spirit-carrying will-o'-wisps in his lantern in the hope of one day making his way back. University students Magi and Yaeko see him take a fatal-looking blow to the head, then watch him walk away unhurt. Once they track him down, he tells them he is immortal. They dismiss him as delusional until they begin seeing apparitions themselves: the spirits of the dead and the demon fire that lights their way after death. Now helping Mogura search for more spirits, the pair are drawn into an odd, mysterious town where the absurd is simply part of life. The result mixes comedy, mystery and supernatural slice of life.
