The Shinsengumi aren't just losing a war, they're losing each other, and Chizuru has to choose between the man she loves and the oath that keeps her alive. Kazama finally gets a story that isn't apologizing for existing, and the animation lets the sword work breathe in ways the TV series never could. The pacing stumbles under the weight of too many perspectives, but by the end, you're not watching a battle, you're watching loyalty die in real time.

The Shinsengumi's world crumbles after their defeat at Koufu Castle. Daylight no longer holds the Furies back, and though the unit's members are still alive, the ties that held them together have been broken apart. Harada, Shinpachi and Saito battle to get out of Koufu. Keeping her promise to Hijikata, Chizuru watches over Kondou, who is recovering from a gunshot wound along with Okita. Hijikata, having taken the Water of Life, must weigh his humanity against a craving for blood and the acts the Fury's power allows. This second and final film retells the first two seasons in a supernatural action drama.
