A basset hound walks through dead Tokyo looking for something that no longer exists. The film doesn't move fast enough to distract you from that fact, it moves slowly enough that you feel it too. Piano opens every scene like a funeral, and by the end you realize the entire OVA was written as a love letter to something already gone, which means you've been grieving the whole time without noticing when it started.
A basset hound shuffles through the empty streets of Tokyo in the near future. After a final war, humanity has been erased from the planet, leaving the city deserted. The lonely dog wants only one thing: to feel the warmth of a person again. Then one day a strikingly beautiful robot shaped like a girl appears before it. Directed by Mamoru Oshii in collaboration with the rock band Glay, this short science fiction OVA is framed as a story of ultimate love in a world with no people left. It premiered in the official short film competition at the 34th Annecy Animation Film Festival in 2010.
