The chemistry between these nine is so lived-in that watching them fail at recruiting feels more real than most idol shows' graduation crises. Season 2 trades heavy narrative stakes for something rarer: a show that actually likes its characters enough to let them be funny, messy, and human instead of plot machines. It's the difference between a school idol story and a story about nine girls who happen to be trying to save their school through music.

A new school year begins at Yuigaoka Girls' High School, and the school idol club Liella! hopes to bring new members into its ranks. The trouble is its own success: the group is so popular and so talented that incoming students are too intimidated to approach, afraid of how demanding the training might be. Club leader and co-founder Kanon Shibuya meets first-year Kinako Sakurakouji and introduces her to school idols. Kinako is captivated but doubts that someone as ordinary as she is could keep up with Liella!'s performances. With encouragement, she joins the club's shared goal of taking on the Love Live! competition once more. The season is a music-focused slice-of-life story.
