A decade of foreshadowing pays off in seven episodes. Mayoi's return isn't fanservice, it's the show finally answering the question it asked in 2009, and the answer unmakes everything you thought about Koyomi's choices. This is pure character study masquerading as a mystery, resolving arcs through conversation and contradiction until you realize every contradiction was always intentional. The dialogue exhausts you by design; Shaft doesn't show you the answer, it talks you into understanding why the answer had to hurt this much. By the finale, you're not watching a conclusion, you're witnessing a decade-long argument between the show and its audience finally end.

Koyomi Araragi, a third-year high school student, wakes in a strange, empty place to find Mayoi Hachikuji before him, the girl who was supposed to have passed on to the afterlife. She tells him they are in Avichi, the lowest level of hell, and that she came to collect him at someone's request. Koyomi wonders how she knew the exact moment of his death and which hell he would land in. With help from his girlfriend Hitagi Senjougahara, he works through puzzles from his past and present. Transfer student Ougi Oshino then comes to him with a proposal, and a peculiar detail on a map of Naoetsu High School points toward a secret about what makes Koyomi who he is. This seven-episode supernatural mystery mixes comedy, romance and psychological drama, and forms part of the Monogatari Series' final season.
