This is the origin story Mewtwo deserved, not a corporate retcon. You watch a creature designed in a lab wake up to consciousness and immediately understand it has no place in the world that made it, no purpose beyond what others decided for it. The special doesn't waste time on sentiment, it shows you exactly why Mewtwo becomes what it becomes, and you can't argue with the logic.

Set before Mewtwo crosses paths with Satoshi and his friends in the upcoming film, this one-episode special looks at Mewtwo's past, its goals, and how it came to be the strongest Pokémon. Mewtwo is on the run from Dunc, a Pokémon Hunter. Because it cannot trust humans, it escapes into the wilderness. Meanwhile Dunc deceives Virgil, the Unova League champion who also runs a Pokémon Rescue Team, into helping him track the legendary Pokémon down.
