X Japan doesn't just soundtrack this video, they are the story. CLAMP animates five musicians as avatars moving through sci-fi wreckage, each frame designed to punch in time with the song rather than explain itself. You're not watching a band perform; you're watching the song become visible, which is the only thing a music video actually needs to do.

Rusty Nail is a single-episode anime music video for X Japan, produced by CLAMP. It came as a VHS bonus with first pressings of the band's 1999 compilation album PERFECT BEST. The video recasts the five members, YOSHIKI, ToshI, hide, PATA and HEATH, as animated characters and sets them in a science fiction scenario, blending action and sci-fi imagery with the band's music.
