This one doesn't try to relaunch anything. It catches up. Years after the Borgman team disbanded, Ryo is buried in rocket science, Chuck Sweager is doing police work like a normal man, and Anise is still the reason Ryo answers the call, and then an army of the undead shows up to drag all three back into the suits they thought they were done wearing. That's the hook: the fights land harder because these people already retired once and know exactly what going back costs them. "Lover's Rain" is a single OVA that spends its runtime on the trio's history instead of world-building, which is why it plays like a reunion with a body count rather than a franchise obligation. If you came out of the 1988 series wanting to know what happened to those three, this is the answer, and it is not a soft one.

Several years after the Borgman team broke up, its three remaining members come back together: rocket scientist Ryo, his girlfriend Anise, and police officer Chuck Sweager. The bio-enhanced crime fighters must face an army of the undead set on murder and destruction. The story continues the 1980s television series about the Borgmen and is told as a single, emotionally charged episode of sci-fi action.
